United States Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced the annual addition of influential American motion pictures to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Twenty five films are being added for their cultural, historic, and aesthetic importance: Among them are blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, and independent films.

Induction marks films’ cultural, historic, and aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage, and being added to the registry ensures that chosen films are permanently preserved.

It's looking unlikely that more than a small percentage of the deteriorating audio-visual legacy of American academic research is going to be saved. Colleges, universities, and research institutions may provide a good test case of how the challenges of sifting and salvation could play out. Triage seems likely to be the order of the day.
