Northeast Historic Film Seeks Media Specialist

Northeast Historic Film, an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1986 in Bucksport ME to preserve and make available moving images of interest to the people of northern New England, is looking for a full-time media specialist for a 12-month grant-funded position working on two projects: Moving Images 1938-1940: Amateur Filmmakers Record the New York World’s Fair and Its Period and The Boston TV News Digital Library: 1960-2000.

The position requires experience and skill in 16 mm. and 8 mm. archival film handling and knowledge of digital video creation, storage, and editing, and its responsibilities include inspecting, cleaning, and repairing film reels and creating access copies for catalogers’ use; digitizing and compressing video, and creating digital selections and still images for dissemination; and assisting institutional partners and workshop participants in handling film in the course of cataloging and metadata creation.

The position pays from $34,000-38,000, health insurance, and paid holidays, and permits a flexible schedule.

Northeast Historic Film Seeks Media Cataloger

Northeast Historic Film, an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1986 in Bucksport ME to preserve and make available moving images of interest to the people of northern New England, is looking for a full-time media cataloger to create descriptive records for 41 film collections in the course of a one-year grant project, “Moving Images 1938-1940: Amateur Filmmakers Record the New York World’s Fair and Its Period,” from February 2011 through January 2012. The Cataloger must have expertise in moving-image metadata theory and practice, to be able to teach audiovisual descriptive practices as well as create records and oversee their creation. Qualifications include previous experience as a moving-image cataloger and an MLS/MLIS/MIS degree or three years’ experience as a skilled cataloger. Northeast Historic Film Offers Fellowships

Northeast Historic Film, an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1986 in Bucksport ME to preserve and make available moving images of interest to the people of northern New England, is offering its 2011 William O’Farrell Fellowship, which is awarded to an individual engaged in research towards a publication, production, or presentation based on moving-image history and culture, particularly amateur and nontheatrical film. The fellowship honors the legacy of Canadian film archivist William O’Farrell (1954-2008), a long time advocate for amateur and nontheatrical film collections who worked as Chief of  Moving Image and Audio Conservation of the Archives of Canada, and longtime supporter of NHF.

The fellowship supports a month’s study in NHF’s collections and awardees must commit a minimum of two weeks to research in residency at NHF. The fellowhip is open to researchers from all academic disciplines, and may be current graduate students or faculty or staff members, archive professionals, film producers, or independent scholars. They must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals with appropriate visas. The fellowship award is made on the basis of the applicant’s experience, the significance of the project, and the appropriateness of the research to NHF collections.

The fellowship includes a stipend of $1,500, staff support with access to NHF collection and related databases, use of film and videotape viewing facilities, up to 8 hours of transfer and/or editing services, office space, and other assistance, but not housing, although NHF staff can assist the fellow in finding lodging.

The fellowship can be began any time after April 4 2011 and must be completed by October 31 2011. The fellow is required to produce an 800–1,200 word article describing activities and findings for publication by NHF.

Harvard Film Archive Hiring

The Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Mass., is seeking to fill an eight-month position cataloging and re-housing a large collection of film stills and ephemera. The stills project assistant will create a finding aid and rehouse the collection into archival containers.

Working in the Harvard Film Archive’s (HFA) Conservation Center, under the direction of the Associate Head of Metadata & Cataloging, the appointee will help to identify, preserve, and create metadata for stills and other film ephemera from the Lothar and Eva Just Film Stills Collection in the Harvard Film Archive.

Illinois Media Preservation Coordinator

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is hiring a full-time media preservation coordinator to provide varied preservation and reformatting services for sound recordings, moving images, and photographic materials in the university’s library, which is among the largest in the U.S. The job, in the library’s Preservation Unit, is to help preserve the university’s capacity to preserve recorded sound and moving-image materials. Among the position’s requirements are a bachelor’s degree and at least 1-3 years experience in audio or audio-visual engineering, production, or preservation; preferred: a graduate degree with training in preservation or audio-video production; supervisory experience; and other skills and experience.
