In Jane Campion: Authorship and Personal Cinema (Indiana University Press), Alistair Fox, a professor of English and Director of the Centre for Research on National Identity at the University of Otago, presents a study of the New Zealand director, and asks how she has used her films – their symbolism, techniques, and aesthetic strategies – as means to address traumas of her life, particularly a complex family background. He uses much new material, including interviews with Campion and her sister and personal writings of her mother, to trace the connections between the filmmaker’s complex background and the thematic preoccupations of her films.
Fox describes his research in our book pages, and notes that no copies of Campion’s first film, Tissues, is held in any archive.
