Northeast Historic Film is offering a full-day workshop titled “Describing Moving Images” for managers and staff members of special collections, historical societies, and archives, as well as “lone arrangers” and LIS students. The event, to be held at Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences Tech Lab, aims to provide a hands-on introduction to content standard and data structure selection for film and video. It will concentrate on PBCore, the metadata standard established in 2005 specifically for audiovisual media assets and rapidly gaining a community of practice, and its use in conjunction with DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard).

The event is part of Northeast Historic Film’s project, Moving Images 1938-1940: Amateur Filmmakers Record the New York World’s Fair and Its Period, with funding provided through the Council on Library and Information Resources program, Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives.

Instructors are Brian Graney, Media Cataloger, Northeast Historic Film; Andrea Leigh, head of Moving Image Processing, Library of Congress, Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation; and Courtney Michael, Project Manager, WGBH Media Library & Archives.

The workshop is almost fully enrolled; register by September 1 at $125; after that, at $150 (currently enrolled students, with ID: $75).

More information and registration is online.
